Energy Performance Certificate South-Africa: A first in South-Africa (EPC South Africa)

South Africa’s first energy performance certificate (EPC South Africa) marks a milestone for the country. EPCs have been implemented in many countries, and South-Africa has joined the international trend towards transparency and disclosure of the energy performance of our buildings.

EPCs rate the energy performance of buildings according to set criteria and grading system – A to G, with A representing the most energy efficient and G the worst.

The first EPC South Africa was issued for the Admin B building at Stellenbosch University. This certificate was issued by Energy Management and Verification Services (EMVS), the first SANAS accredited EPC inspection body in the country.

The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) is on record for commenting that this certification, secured early this year, will encourage energy efficiency through benchmarking and disclosure of building energy performance.

SANEDI is responsible for hosting and maintaining a national Building Energy Performance Register. The register will provide a comprehensive picture of the energy efficiency performance of our buildings and monitor progress towards improving their performance.

Property owners, including state organisations, should take note of the deadline of 7 December 2022* by which time all buildings that meet the criteria for mandatory certification need to have an EPC. * Update 25 Nov 2022: The deadline for Energy Performance Certificate South-Africa has been extended to 7 December 2025.
